Last night with Frank Zappa

Well, it was almost like being with him. I had a chance to catch Sheik Yerbouti - a German F. Zappa cover band at the Colos Saal here in Aschaffenburg.

What was amazing was that Napoleon Murphy Brock accompanied them - which gave them a truly authentic sound. I saw Zappa in '77 twice - once at Winterland in SF, and then again at the Stanford Auditorium at Stanford U. I was having some cool flash backs.

And they played all my favorite songs! Yay!

The awkward thing was - I had to go alone. We had no baby-sitter, and the guys that I usually go out with were all busy with work travels or family things.

So there I was by my lonesome. But it was cool, during intermission I just pulled out cell phone and pretended to text - eliminating any "loner dude" moment.

There were about 200 people there - I counted about 5 under 30s. The rest old guys like me

Here's an excerpt from the band:

Well I thought I saw Zappa twice in '77. I was waay mistaken.

I did a Google search on Zappa and Stanford University - I found an entry on all his gigs - to include his playlist:

    But where was "Winterland"??

Man, was I way off. I thought I had seen him a couple of weeks before during the same tour - nope. It was TWO YEARS earlier that I had seen him. I was only 17, but after reading this review, it all started coming back to me:

...But in all honesty I mostly remember Beefheart,
who was (in my mindset of the time) terrible. Of
course I didn't know what he was about either. But he
seemed not to be having a good time and took it out on
the audience. We were down on the floor during the
first part, when people started to boo ...

That was ME in the front row up against the stage!! I was booing this guy (what an obnoxious 17 year old I was) and flipping the guy off. Captain Beefheart flipped me off as well, reached down and rubbed his middle finger against mine. A real classy moment. That's about the time he stuck the mic in his sax and started blaring away.

Wow. Google is cool when you can find gems like this...

Youtube is even cooler - check it out and you might find footage. I did that for a Ramones concert I attended at Brixton way back and sure enough some of it was on there.
