I'm in the middle of Julian Jaynes "The Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind."

It's roughly a theory on how ancient man (up to about 5000 years ago) had brains split more or less in two. Their consciousness (right side) was an audible "voice" in their heads - as opposed to ours, which is a silent dialogue. Thus they were commanded by the voice of the "gods". And this is why most ancient beliefs/religions include the gods speaking and experiencing visions.

Since then, our minds have fused together, thus we don't hear the gods speak (as loud as we used to), and we don't see them either.

Fascinating stuff.

Sounds like total bollocks to me. If it all stopped 5,000 years ago, where's the other half of my brain then, eh? Answer that one Mr Philosopher! Plus I can still hear the voices in my head! Mer!

"Jack and Jane in Toyland" is a good read when you're done on that one mate. Highly recommended...don't want to add spoilers but the plastic beaker is magic! Classic!

Funny you should mention hearing voices. There is a chapter on just that - about voices heard by either people suffering from mental diseases (Schizophrenia for instance), and those people who consider themselves normal...

If you're interested in this sort of reading - here is a relatively good explanation of his theory (and book)

The voice in your head may explain why you hear it!

That is very interesting. I will read some more on it. Thanks

Well, I was looking up some stuff online regarding H.P.Lovecraft's Necronomicon & such, and very early on found a site that mentioned that very book. http://www.thephoeron.com/occult.html

I like deep thoughts, & particularly beer fueled lively discussions, just to keep them from being too deep.

I have a theory that if three people whose opininion you respect tell you the same thing, you might want to consider it. One more occurance of this title topping up, I'm ponying up cash for it.
