I'm in the middle of Julian Jaynes "The Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind."
It's roughly a theory on how ancient man (up to about 5000 years ago) had brains split more or less in two. Their consciousness (right side) was an audible "voice" in their heads - as opposed to ours, which is a silent dialogue. Thus they were commanded by the voice of the "gods". And this is why most ancient beliefs/religions include the gods speaking... |
