I don't know about other software, but I "investigated" for my own satisfaction, the issue between free play and real money play.

This is what I was told:

No Download, Free Play and Real Money Play are ALL on the same server. It is all but impossible to manipulate any variances to the casino's advantage or otherwise, without corrupting the entire server.

There IS a psychological difference, which may account for the "myth" that casinos manipulate Free Play to entice players into making a deposit:

When you are playing with $10,000 in free money (or $5000, or $2000) youre likley not going to care about being conservative and in the end, Free Play will register more percieved "wins" because you are betting maybe ten times higher than you would using your own funds.

By the way, Microgaming maintains the servers at centralized locations. An indivdual casino operator is merely networked, and has no access at all.
