By giving "Thanks" SnowKatt and I will quote the Meister here "This gives everyone in the forum a chance to give credit to well thought out posts, to show appreciation for a stupid-ass joke or a helpful tip, etc." and I would add to that a pic of a nice screenshot or you might want to thank someone who has responded to a question you asked where they gave you a helpful answer, or where someone say like "Jetset" for example has posted a news article that you thought was interesting...
On another note...you also don't need to thank everyone just because they are talking to you either,,but rather for something you felt useful to you...could have just been the fact that someone cheered up your day and made you laugh you know...just use your own judgement but don't go hog wild with thanking everyone...
