I use them for convenience in order that I do not have to carry large amounts of cash or sign hundreds of travelers checks. RW, summed it up pretty well as glanced but I will list a few other RANDOM THOUGHTS about markers that may not have been mentioned in this thread as I skimmed it:
1.Lines are not only determined by one's bank account balance but also a central gaming report that casinos obtain and one's own credit history! These are the primary criteria used.
2.Markers are basically the same as writing a check and I believe are negoiatable instruments as the casino can present markers for payment in the event the signer of the marker fails to meet it's obligation to pay.
3.Markers can be paid back at any time before due even while your are playing assuming the marker has not gone to the cage for processing.
4. I always request my paid markers be returned to me once they are paid in full. This is a personal preference. All paid in full markers upon return should be marked "PAID".
5.Vegas, per my experiences will not let you cash chips for cash if you have an outstanding balance on a marker even if payment is not due for X days. All markers would have to be paid in full before you could obtain cash for chips. Obviously, this is for several reasons with competive being a primary. It may even be a State regulation but I have no idea.....To the contrary, in Tunica and elsewhere (I assume) you can obtain cash for chips regardless of an outstanding balance on a marker then walk across the street to another casino!
6.I think that establishing a LOC can possibly contribute to better upfront comp commitments, invites, offers, etc. (depending on the casino). It does help to establish player loyalty in the eyes of casino management I would think.
7.Regardless of what your host or other casino management tells you, casino's will discount marker's for certain player's but they will never do it voluntarily as a rule. One must play their game and seek the discount. As an example, the Las Vegas megaresorts generally will not discount markers until losses exceed 6 figures for domestic players. International players get more consideration for marker discounting. Not sure why as I do not buy what I have been told!

I will post a paid marker in a few for all to see and hopefully be able to read!
